ARTIST STATEMENT

In my practice, I gather much of my inspiration from my faith, family, the environment in which I live, and African American culture. My processes are based on how each of my inspirations has impacted me. I enjoy working with many medias such as painting, printmaking, book arts, paper cuts, drawing, and ceramic sculpture. The mediums I use speak to my concept of breaking bonders in art as an African American woman. I take stereotypes that have been placed on African Americans, particularly Black women and allow my viewers to see what life is like as a black person in America. Lately, I've found that printmaking and book arts go hand in hand with building my ideas because they allow me to turn my thoughts into printed images and books. My artwork is a reflection of my inner thoughts of how I view the world around me. The process of creating work that will not only live for the present but for the future keeps me coming back to the studio with more engaging ideas.
